Mary Silveira News 2.7.21
Posted 2/6/21

Dear Mary Silveira community, a big thank you to all of you who came out and supported our Johnny's Doughnut Drive-Through event. You waited in epic lines to support our school, join a Covid-friendly community event, and, of course, eat donuts! Due to the record turnout, some of you did not get the donuts you'd hoped for, or did not get donuts at all, and for that I am truly sorry. For perspective, we sold the most donuts today in the history of a one-truck event for Johnny's Doughnuts! They were blown away by the turnout, so way to go MES and MCVA!

Big thank you to MESHSA for organizing the event and making this happen!

Picture Day - February 11th

Picture Day is on for this Thursday, February 11th. Our picture company has designed a safe, Covid-friendly way for all kids to have their pictures taken in the MPR that day. Only two students will be in the MPR at a time, they will be 8-10 ft away from one another, and masks will only be down for about 45 seconds per child. There is no need to pre-order pictures. We will send you info on how to look at and purchase pictures after the event.

Make-up Picture Day is on March 25th.

Ross Valley Charter created a really cool resource for Black History Month, with a special focus on Marin. Check it out HERE

The Marin County Office of Ed. is even holding an event that will examine the resource. The presentation will center around creating conversation with one another,  using an amazing Celebrating Black History Month February 2021 interactive resource as an engaging tool for educators, students, and families. We will also have the opportunity to hear about how the families, guardians, staff, and school community members of Ross Valley Charter came together to design this valuable piece of our collective history.

All are welcome to attend to learn more about this incredible teaching resource for families to use at home.

Tuesday, February 9th from 4:30-5:30PM

At MES, we continue to celebrate the achievements and contributions made by the black community.  Our librarian, Mrs. Armstrong, has compiled a list of books we have in our MES library that students can check out to read stories about black characters, stories about black experiences and/or stories by black authors and artists. You can find that list HERE. Mrs. Armstrong will be spotlighting books each week for K-1, 2-3, and 4-5 related to Black History Month, which she'll read aloud to students. Our art teacher, Ms. Winter, has great lessons planned for this month and our teachers will provide "windows and mirrors" experiences to students in class on this theme. In addition, parent volunteers have created Black History Month posters that spotlight important figures of Black History. Those will go up all around campus this week - a very cool project, so thank you to the parents who helped bring that together!

Lunar New Year 2021 - The Year of the Ox!

This Friday, February 12th is the Lunar New Year - The Year of the Ox. The Lunar New Year is celebrated by over 1.5 Billion people worldwide. Celebrations take place each year in many countries such as the USA, China, South Korea, Vietnam, to name just a few. Zero Waste Certification!

We are excited to announce that Mary Silveira has achieved Bronze Level Zero Waste Certification for the 2019-2020 school year through the Zero Waste Schools Program. This certification is in recognition of Mary Silveira's achievements in reducing our waste last year. Thank you to Ms. Yamamoto, Hugo Pineda, and our student Green Team for all of their hard work to protect the environment and create a culture of Zero Waste on our campus. Thank you also to those who continue to walk and bike to school! We have much more work to do, but we've at least gotten the ball rolling!

Uppers, Downers, and All-Arounders

In the fourth of six virtual community discussions that follow the chapters of Let's Talk: A toolkit for navigating teen substance use in Marin County, we will look closely at “Uppers, Downers and All-Arounders.”

The event moderator, Jaclynn Davis, authored the Let's Talk booklet. She received her Masters in Public Health and Social Work, and now focuses on adolescent health and youth development through her work with Huckleberry Youth Programs, local school districts, and teaching at Dominican University.

Our guest expert, Jennifer Epstein, has been a Health Educator for the past 20 years, and has taught in both public and private high schools in San Francisco. Her curriculum focuses on substance use prevention with an emphasis on saying "know." She has talked with hundreds of young people frankly about substances and uses student voices as well as current research to create class sessions that are both informative and relevant.

Michael Danne will share the youth perspective on this topic. Michael is a Senior at Redwood High School and is co-chair of the Marin Healthy Youth Partnerships Youth Advisory Council. He is also a Tobacco Use Prevention Education (TUPE) peer educator.

You will have the opportunity to ask questions and share ideas. We hope you can join us. Feel free to share and bring a friend! All attendees will be entered in raffle for local gift cards.

Picture Day is coming... Thursday, February 11, 2021!

2) In-Person Picture Day at Mary Silveira. This is an opportunity for interested families to get traditional school photos. If that fills up, they will extend more slots later in the day, which will also be available via a sign up form. For parents who can't make February 11th work, MCVA families can get an in-person photo taken on Thursday, March 25th on Picture Re-Take Day.
