Young Authors Week 1...Dress Like Your Favorite Book Pictures!

Young Authors Week Continues with Week 2!

Monday, April 26: Book Recommendation Day

Principal for the Day: Brooke Shelston’s Book Recommendation

Hi I’m Brooke. I’m principal for the day, and my book recommendations are Best Friends, and Ramona the Brave. Ramona the Brave is about the little girl Ramona who thinks growing up will be so much fun, but her new first-grade teacher, Mrs. Griggs isn’t very exciting. Ramona gets into arguments with her friends, and Ramona doesn’t realize that first grade isn’t always easy.

Best Friends is about a girl Shannon, and she is about to go into sixth grade. Right when she thinks everything is going great and she finally has friends, she realizes that when they’re getting ready for seventh grade, she might be interested in other things. She has to try to do what she wants to do instead of following the popular people.

-Principal Shelston, April 26, 2021

Tuesday: Create a Class Story Day

Wednesday, April 28: Guest Author Day / Parents & PJ's Day:

On Wednesday, our final day of our Young Authors Week, we will have a Pajama Day Spirit Day.

Also, since we can't our traditional Parents & PJ's day at school, please plan on spending some time with your young reader or writer at home by having them read to you or share writing with you.

Finally, we are very excited to have award-winning author and consummate storyteller Carmen Agra Deedy visit our school as part of our Young Author Week celebrations! She will join us via Zoom this Wednesday.

As always when we invite authors to our school we show our appreciation and support by making their books available for purchase - this time through one of our favorite local independent bookstores, Copperfields, in Petaluma.

To learn more and purchase one of Carmen Agra Deedy's books please click HERE.  You will need to use the password: Mary

Staff Appreciation Week!  May 3 - 7

From May 3-7, we will have Staff Appreciation Week.  This is a great week for kids to show their teachers how much they are appreciated. Here are some ideas to consider throughout the week:

•Homemade Cards

•Special treat

•Bringing classroom supplies that all children could benefit from

•Donating a book to the teacher's classroom library

•Choosing something from a teacher's "Wishlist" (if they have one)

•Other creative ideas you have

Bringing in a homemade card, or acknowledging the hard work of our classroom aides, librarian, specialists, secretaries, and other staff in some small, but thoughtful way is also appreciated!

Our Very Own DEI Newsletter!

The Mary Silveira Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion group put together an amazing newsletter focusing on the month of April.

Please Click Here to see the incredible work our very own MES parents did on this. The focus for this newsletter was Environmental Justice, since Earth Day is on April 22, and Arab-American Heritage Month, which lasts the month of April.

A big shout out to all their hard work on this!

Parents, please take some time to read the newsletter and discuss aspects of it with your children!

For May, we are working on a series of newsletters to honor Asian American and Pacific Islander History Month. If you have an interest in researching and writing up a short piece about an Asian American or Pacifiic Islander that has made a positive impact on our country, please email Mr. Remmers.

Celebrate Mother Earth by visiting our Can Do!-funded Gardens at each school site and experiencing nature through art in this marvelous art lesson by Laura Winters!

2021-22 Family Giving Campaign is open now!

In preparation of a more traditional school experience in the fall, Can Do! is accepting donations for the 2021-22 Family Giving Campaign now!

Now is the time to look towards the future and start preparing for a new school year that will hopefully look more familiar to us all.

While the specifics of the Can Do!-funded programs are still being planned, we do know the intention of the District is to bring back as many programs and activities as possible.  Elementary programs like:

  • K-2nd Grade Music & Movement Specialist and Supplies @ each site

  • Elementary Physical Education Specialist and Supplies @ each site

  • Elementary Art Specialist and Supplies @ each site

  • K-5th Grade Social Emotional Support

  • Technology

  • Environmental Sciences via site gardens

In order to fully restore these programs, we need to start raising money today.

Please consider donating early!

Click here to donate online or here to print out a 2021-22 remit

Top 5 Reasons to Give Early:

  1. Donate in May and spread your 2021-22 payments out over 14 months.

  2. Be first to get your 2021-22 Can Do! car magnet.

  3. Donate the full ask amount ($600 per student) by June 30th to get a free calendar highlighting elementary students’ artwork and pre-populated district dates.

  4. Your early commitment to Can Do! helps secure funding to fully restore programming for all students next year.

  5. Be a part of the community that values excellence and equity in education.

Did you get your jump rope last week?

Check out Coach Paoli’s classroom video for jumping tips!

Looking for a rewarding volunteer experience?

Can Do! is looking for Can Do! Ambassadors at each site.
