Happy Mother's Day! To all our moms out there, thank you for your tireless dedication, love and support!  We wouldn't have the amazing kids at MES without your devotion, time and the care you put in each and every day. You deserve much more than a single day to celebrate you!  Cheers!

Staff Appreciation Week!

A big thank you to MESHSA, our school district, Can Do!, and all of our MES families for making Staff Appreciation Week so special. Our staff felt very appreciated with the breakfasts, coffee, luncheon's, gifts, and thoughtful notes everyone received. It felt great to see everyone getting acknowledged and thanked for the tireless commitment to our students during this pandemic. We all very much appreciate your appreciation! Thank you!

The Mary Silveira Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion group has put

together four amazing newsletters focusing on Asian American and Pacific Island History Month, which takes place all the month of May.  Parents, please take some time to read the newsletter, watch the videos, and discuss aspects of it with your children!  A big shout out to our DEI team's hard work on this! This issue focuses on Dance, and contains a powerful resolution our team adopted condemning violence and hate directed at Asian Americans in our country.

Town Hall and Panel Discussion on Student Vaccinations

The Marin County Office of Education, in collaboration with Marin County Public Health and Kaiser Permanente, will be hosting a Town Hall Meeting and Panel Discussion on student vaccinations for parents, guardians and the school community on 

Tuesday, May 11, 2021 from 6:00 – 7:30 pm. The Town Hall is available by zoom and Facebook LIVE.

Two Books/One Silveira!

One Book/One Silveira is shifting to Two Books/One Silveira.

The common theme to our stories is having imaginary friends to help people get through hard times. The book Crenshaw, by Katherine Applegate, is being purchased for all 3-5th grade students. This book is about a 5th grader named Jackson, who has an imaginary friend named Crenshaw. Crenshaw is a great big cat. He helps Jackson deal with the fact that his family has fallen on hard economic times.  

For our K-2 classes, we are purchasing classroom copies of the read aloud The Adventures of Beekle, the Unimaginary Friend, by Dan Santat.  Beekle is a darling story of an imagininary friend who is searching for their perfect human companion. 

Recordings in both English and Spanish of Beekle will be made available to Silveira students and families as Two Books/One Silveira gets underway.

Special thanks to MESHSA for underwriting this community building Silveira tradition. Additionally, we are grateful for our CanDO! Funded amazing art teacher, Ms. Winter, who will be doing some art related lessons to Crenshaw and The Adventures of Beekle, the Unimaginary Friend.

Parent Input on Class Placements - Please Read

Staff and I are beginning the process of planning for next year and will soon begin designing classes based on enrollment projections. 


As per Board Policy, the teaching staff and principal share the responsibility for student placement. The teachers meet by grade levels before the end of the year to develop classes. Classes will be designed based upon the following criteria: 

➢ Ratio of boys to girls

➢ Students with special needs

➢ Second language learners 

➢ Learning styles 

➢ Social/Emotional needs

➢ Citizenship 

Parent input will be considered if the input is based upon clear-cut educational or developmental needs (per board policy). All input must be received by May 25th and be in writing to the principal.


Accommodations will not be made to place your student in a class with a particular teacher or with friends and we ask that you do not include specific teacher names in your correspondence.  A family may have had a sibling in a class with a particular teacher previously but this is not considered a valid educational reason for placement. Each child’s needs are unique and because a brother or sister liked or disliked a teacher does not mean the sibling will have the same experience.

The key ingredient to this process is trust. You need to trust that we will do the best job possible in placing your student with all the information at our disposal. We do the best job we can because it is important to us that each child has the optimum chance for success.




As you may have heard, Can Do! is accepting donations for the 2021-22 school year now!   Can Do! will be on campus during drop-off times to answer questions, collect donations, and to thank all our families!


Our goal is to have 10% of our families contribute to the 2021-22 Family Giving Campaign (FGC) by May 21st.  CAN we DO it?!

“The Wishing Tree” is Art Instructor Laura Winter’s latest project.  Students are creating decorated hearts, with their wish for the future, that will be hung on a tree at each school.  Make sure to look for the tree the next time you are on campus.

School Lunch Program Available for In-Person and MCVA!

The US department of Agriculture extended all Seamless Summer Option (SSO) waivers through June 30, 2021.  This allows schools to offer free meals to all children under age 18.  Distance learners will be able to order a 5-day meal kit (vegetarian or meat).  In-person learners will be able to order simple daily GrabnGo cold lunches to have at school. (vegetarian or meat)

Vaccination Appointments Open to All Marin Residents

Public health has opened COVID-19 vaccinations to everyone who lives or works in Marin who are 16 years old or older.  They now have sufficient vaccination capacity to ensure that our low HPI / vulnerable communities will be able to easily & quickly get vaccination appointments so we have been able to completely open up vaccination appointments to the general public and have good availability.

Going forward they , we will continuing updating that page will additional days at the Marin Center POD, Kerner / MCC POD, the increasing number of mobile POD operations, and other options including Kaiser & pharmacies.

Mobile Crisis Response Team

We would like to introduce to you the Mobile Crisis Response Team. The Mobile Crisis Response Team responds to mental health and substance abuse crises and psychiatric emergencies in the community throughout Marin County. They work collaboratively with the citizens of Marin County, community based mental health and substance abuse agencies, hospitals and local law enforcement to increase the safety of individuals in a crisis. Parent Tech Tool Kit

Crushing the Curve

Crushing the Curve is a collaborative project with North Bay counties to provide youth with resources to help them with the challenges of COVID-19.

Parent & Youth Helpline and Parents Anonymous

In partnership with Governor Newsom, Parents Anonymous® Inc. recently launched the California Parent & Youth Helpline and Online Parents Anonymous® Support Groups in response to the Coronavirus to provide free trauma-informed, evidenced-based emotional support to Parents, Children and Youth in any language via calls, text, live chat and email.  The California Parents & Youth Helpline operates 7 days a week from 8:00AM-8:00PM. 

Parents can Join a Weekly Online Support Group NOW through the website: In this confidential setting, Parents address their underlying emotions and build resiliency to strengthen their family.

1) Two Books/One MCVA

Two Books/One MCVA is a virtual spin on a tradition we've had at Mary Silveira. The idea is to bring people together to read a common book so we can all talk about the same stories. This year, we are reading two books: 4th and 5th graders in MCVA will have access to a digital version of Crenshaw and K-3 students in MCVA will have digital access to the story The Adventures of Beekle, the Unimaginary Friend. We hope students will read and discuss these books with you at home.
