A Message from Lily Mbaidjol, Principal for the Day!

One of the hard things this year was I had to wear a mask and social distance. But what was harder was distance learning because I couldn’t see my friends. Now that we are back in school, there are lots of fun activities to do here at Mary Silvera, such as the Wax Museum. After being remote from March until January, I really enjoyed being able to be with friends this year. Recess is a fun time to play games outside like soccer or hide and seek. Eating lunch with friends is also a crown pleasure.  This year my class gets to do a class field day, which we didn’t get to do last year. The walkathon is also a fun activity to do. It’s where you walk around and do laps to raise money. I took some photos of students doing their Wax Museum presentations (like Tom Brady, Rosie the Riveter, and Alex Morgan) and kids having fun outside. Hope you enjoy!    -Lily

Happy LGBTQ+ Pride Month!

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, Plus Pride Month (LGBTQ+ Pride Month) is celebrated annually in June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Riots and works to achieve equal justice and equal opportunity for LGBTQ+ Americans.

Today, celebrations include pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposia and concerts, and LGBTQ+ Pride Month events attract millions of participants around the world. Memorials are held during this month for those members of the community who have been lost to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS. The purpose of the commemorative month is to recognize the impact that LGBTQ+ individuals have had on history locally, nationally, and internationally.

At Mary Silveira, our goal is to combat bias based on gender identity, gender expression, or sexual orientation. We want all our LGBTQ+ students to feel, “I belong here, I feel supported here, I am proud to be who I am.”

By encouraging greater acceptance and support for all youth, including those who are, or are perceived to be, LGBTQ+, we can all make communities, schools, and other settings safer, better places for all youth.

As County Superintendent Mary Jane Burke recently wrote, "We must continue to work with our children at home, in school, in sports and other activities, and in their places of worship to help them understand the beauty and strength of a community does not just tolerate diversity and individual choice; but embraces, encourages, and nurtures it."
