Congratulations on a Historic Year!

I want to congratulate you and your children on the great work you all did this year. This is the only year in the history of this country where public schools like ours had three different models in one year: "Remote," "Hybrid," "Modified Traditional." The Miller Creek School District has been around since the 1860's, and never before has there been this much change in one school year. Yet despite this all being new, you rose to each new challenge and shined!

This year, students had to learn how to use Google classroom, navigate Clever, become Zoom experts, learn from Loom videos, go on virtual field trips, work with parents and guardians more closely than ever before, be responsible in a way that most students never had to previously, learn how to wear masks all day at school, practice social-distancing, play with only their own classmates (and in only one part of the yard), and be okay with not having big schoolwide gatherings like assemblies and Ice Cream Socials. Your children really impressed me and our staff with how positive they were this year, and how flexible they've been.

I want to thank MESHSA and Can Do! for all their support. We really depended on them this year, and they came through in a big way.  And I want to thank our staff, who worked tirelessly and showed flexibility and creativity all year. They deserve a big round of applause!

Last, but not least, parents and guardians - a big shout out to you!  You are nothing short of incredible. You had to make many sacrifices in order to navigate the Global Pandemic, keep your children safe, do well at your jobs, help with remote learning, and adjust to three new models of school, all while running your homes and keeping your sanity.  I'm in awe of what you've accomplished this year.  I hope next year is a lot easier for all of you.

I hope you and your children get some much-needed downtime this summer. You all deserve a lot of rest and relaxation and fun. I am proud of you all and wish you the best!

Go Stars!

Last Week Fun!

Many thanks to all the parents that helped make our 5th-Grade Promotion a big success! Happy LGBTQ+ Pride Month!

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, Plus Pride Month (LGBTQ+ Pride Month) is celebrated annually in June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Riots and works to achieve equal justice and equal opportunity for LGBTQ+ Americans.

Today, celebrations include pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposia and concerts, and LGBTQ+ Pride Month events attract millions of participants around the world. Memorials are held during this month for those members of the community who have been lost to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS. The purpose of the commemorative month is to recognize the impact that LGBTQ+ individuals have had on history locally, nationally, and internationally.

At Mary Silveira, our goal is to combat bias based on gender identity, gender expression, or sexual orientation. We want all our LGBTQ+ students to feel, “I belong here, I feel supported here, I am proud to be who I am.”

By encouraging greater acceptance and support for all youth, including those who are, or are perceived to be, LGBTQ+, we can all make communities, schools, and other settings safer, better places for all youth.

As County Superintendent Mary Jane Burke recently wrote, "We must continue to work with our children at home, in school, in sports and other activities, and in their places of worship to help them understand the beauty and strength of a community does not just tolerate diversity and individual choice; but embraces, encourages, and nurtures it."
